Basic facts- Wobbler Johnson, referring to Kirsty, in Only You Can Save Mankind by Terry Pratchett My name is Crystal Lee Cooper. Although the quote above seems to imply otherwise, my name is spelt with a C [*]. I just wrote that quote down because, despite the spelling, I was intrigued to hear that my name was apparently made up. I was born at 5:59 a.m., on the 19th of May 1983, in a small town called Gosford in New South Wales. I have a twin sister, Erica, who is two minutes older than me. I also have a brother, Jordan, who is ten years younger than me. We have a pet dog called Cooper, but really he's only my mum's dog, because the rest of the family doesn't like him. [*] Not with a bloody K. I don't understand why everyone wants to spell it with a K. I looked my name up in one of those baby name books. It said that Crystal meant "female use of the common noun". Since the common noun is spelt with a C, why oh why do people always try to spell it with a K? Location- Luke Skywalker, from Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope In my case, town. That is, I'm in the town that is farthest from the bright center of the planet. I am speaking of Brisbane, Australia. It's the capital of the state Queensland. Actually, I live about an hour south of Brisbane by train, which is how I travel there, because I don't drive. I've lived in the same house since I was two, and everything here is more familiar to me than the back of my hand [*], so it gets a little monotonous at times. The weather is hot here, and far too humid, and it's always sunny. I like cold, cloudy weather much better, so it'd be my luck to be stuck in the Sunshine State. Despite the (in my opinion) terrible weather, Brisbane has its good points. There's lots of trees... it's laid-back... and the trains always run on time.
[*] This would not be hard. I don't spend much time studying the back of my hand. Work1) Silence; 2) Books must be returned no later than the date last shown; and 3) Do not interfere with the nature of causality. - from Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett I work as a library assistant at Logan North Library in Logan City, Queensland. I work full-time, Tuesday to Saturday. I'm responsible for repairs, which means I get to recover books and glue in torn pages and other assorted tasks. I also have to help out with the general tasks that keep a library running, like loaning and returning books. I actually quite enjoy it, and I am rather proud of the fact that I can put contact on books without too many bubbles. The only drawback to my job that I've found is that every day I see books I want to read, but I've not got the time to read many of them. I catch the bus to and from work, and I will just say that if a bus ever arrives on time, I'll keel over and die from the shock of it. Woodford Folk Festival- Miles From Nowhere, at Woodford Folk Festival 2001 I've written in depth about my two trips to Woodford here. It's a seven day folk festival held about two hours from my home. It's held over New Year every year, and I have attended the 1999-2000 and the 2000-2001 festivals. MusicI don't care if I'm alone here Singing songs to myself There's nobody else around, around - Belle and Sebastian, "Women's Realm", on the album "Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like A Peasant" I have a section on all of my favourite bands here. I can't describe my favourite style of music, but I like lots of bands: the Beatles, Belle and Sebastian, Ben Folds Five, Marcy Playground, Moxy Frvous, They Might Be Giants, the Whitlams, and others.
Books- Terry Pratchett, author of the Discworld series I love reading. I have been able to read since I was three and I haven't stopped since. It's pretty rare for me to not be halfway through any number of books. My favourite authors and books are discussed here, but these are the most well-loved of my collection (or the library's collection). I generally read children's fantasy novels, because I think they're better than most adult ones.
Films and Television Shows- Bart Simpson to Lisa Simpson as she turns on the television I don't watch a great deal of TV, but I love movies. Here is my page on films and TV shows that I like. I love almost any film that revolves around music, such as High Fidelity, Almost Famous, Moulin Rouge and most importantly, A Hard Day's Night. I'm a George Lucas fan, shown by my love of the Star Wars movies, the Indiana Jones movies, and the Labyrinth, all of which I liked before I realised that Lucas worked on them all in some capacity. Computer Games- Newton Pulsifer, in Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman I haven't got a great computer, so I don't play very advanced games. My favourite game is Age of Empires, in which you have to build an empire. I also like TIE Fighter, which is far better than its counterpart X-Wing (which for some obscure reason refuses to run on my computer anyway). I also love the Monkey Island games, of which I have only played the first three, because my computer won't run the newest one. I've collected a bunch of quotes from Monkey Island, which are on my quotes page here. Politics and Views- Gough Whitlam, Prime Minister of Australia 1972-1975 For anyone who doesn't know who Whitlam is (probably any non-Australian), he was a Prime Minister of Australia whose government was dissolved (unfairly) by the governor-general of Australia, hence the statement above, probably one of the most well-known quotes in Australian history. Like Whitlam, I am a staunch Republican[*]. But I didn't get to vote in the referendum held to decide whether Australia should secede from the Commonwealth, because I was not of voting age (this was held on November 6 1999, for all those who don't know). I vote for the Democrats [**]. The party is led by Natasha Stott Despoja, and the deputy leader is Aden Ridgeway. The man I want in the Senate is the legendary Andrew Bartlett, a Queensland senator. He once dressed up in Alice Cooper style makeup to publicise the issue of freeing battery hens. I saw him speaking at a forum on Aboriginal reconciliation at Woodford Folk Festival, which was really interesting. He's sort of my political hero. [*] That is, the Australian kind of Republican, not one of those right-wing American ones. The anti-monarchy kind of Republican.
Contact details- Kate Anselm, in Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency by Douglas Adams I am not like Gordon Way [*]. I have really only got one form of online contact and it is my e-mail address, which is [email protected] . (Take away the bit that says .nospam to e-mail me). That's actually about the only way there is to contact me. I do have an ICQ number but I never use it (this has more than a little to do with the fact that I can never remember exactly what the number is). I used to have IRC but it was deleted when my computer's motherboard got stuffed up and the technician had to wipe the hard drive, and I haven't downloaded it again. I do have AOL Instant Messenger, but I rarely use it, because I am sick of people with screen names like "HotGuy69" trying to chat to me. My IM screen name is DrPyser265. I try to keep up to date reading the following newsgroups although I rarely post to them:
[*] Read Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency by the late and legendary Douglas Adams, because it's good, but read The Long Dark Tea-time of the Soul by the same author, because it's brilliant. He'll be sorely missed. Crystal Lee Cooper - http://zap.to/strawberryfields/ |
